Google Glass: the Future for Teachers

With the Google Glass announcement this week, came this little snippet that I'm not seeing much buzz about (at least in the education sector):

This could have a major impact on education as we know it. We teachers are already seeing the shift from students being knowledge containers to knowledge users. If Google Glass opens the door to information being readily accessible, will that open Pandora's box?

What about cheating? If a student can pull up any fact from anywhere, the focus will be less on memorization and more on problem solving. How a student uses information will be the true test of learning.

How will I know if a student is on task? If anyone can effectively zone out behind their Glass in an undetectable manner, the challenge will be on us educators to give our students meaningful, engaging, real-world tasks that students want to complete.

Am I even necessary if all the knowledge in the world is at my student's disposal? YES. Teachers will always be needed for the human touch they add to the learning process. Teachers will be the guides that help students navigate information in a productive way. Those navigation steps will look different for elementary and secondary students. Teachers will be necessary to help students understand how to filter and apply information to the task at hand.

I'm excited to see what the Project Glass team is able to accomplish in the next few years. It could be a game changer.
